Thanks to all the GFOPs who responded to JW’s magical article on pickup football with stories of their own pickup soccer adventures. It warms our cockles to see so many of you communing over the game we love. We’ve put a collection of some of the pictures and stories we received below. Please keep them coming, GFOPs. COURAGE.
Arturo Calisto (Ventura, Calif.) - An OG GFOP and the one who inspired JW to write his piece.
Steve Joh (Menlo Park/Palo Alto, Calif.) - Steve has been running a weekly pickup league with his wife for the better part of two decades.
Michael Miller (Twin Cities, Minn.) - Michael wrote in to tell us about his days playing pickup in Dalkeith, Scotland, a former coal town outside of Edinburgh.
Chris Pavlich (Minneapolis, Minn.) - Chris is involved with an over-40 game affectionately nicknamed Donkey FC. Their motto: “Pride Through Muddle”
Michael Coccoluto (Stoneham, Mass.) - A pickup game held at a local hoops court in any weather. Our favorite bit about this one: as soon as they get numbers in the WhatsApp group, they throw up the Bat Signal, "Cage On," to let members know the game is happening.
Brad Satava (FishHawk, Fla.) - A group of co-workers and former co-workers who have started a regular game entering its fifth year.
