Rog and Davo do a forensic deep dive on the state of soccer in the U.S. after the USMNT's failure to qualify for the World Cup. Fox's Alexi Lalas and ESPN's Herc Gomez join MiB on stage to talk Sunil Gulati, which players should never receive another call up, and Promotion/Relegation.
A note from Rog:
We came together to mourn. We came together to share our pain. We came together, still shaking our heads in disbelief that the T&T nightmare really happened. This was the most solemn Men In Blazers live show we have ever had. Thanks to Alexi and Herc -- and the four World Cups they have experienced between them -- one of the most thoughtful. An attempt to push through the five stages of grief and move from the darkness to the light, and from wallowing to positive, forward-looking productive action.
Three quick thoughts on the evening:
1. It was astonishing how profoundly rocked so many fans are right now by the USMNT failure. We raised a Guinness with GFOPs who had flown in from California, Arizona, and Texas, just to be together. The pain is real. And it is going to take a long, long time for it to subside for many of you.
2. These are complex questions with no easy silver bullet fixes. The issues of better scouting, coaching, and youth development are themes I want to revisit on a repeat basis in the year ahead.
3. The idea that came out of the show -- of inviting each of the Presidential candidates to a live show debate -- is one we will take seriously. The more we can discuss, the better off we will all be. Only by taking all of these conversations out of the Shadows, can we move from the Darkness towards the Light.
We are grateful to all of you who joined us for what really felt like a much-needed beer-soaked Wake. To many more times together, for happier reasons in the years to come.
