Every evening, as the sun sets on the Crap Part of Soho, we joyfully draw a massive black X through one more day on our Kyle Beckerman 2014 calendar. We are less than three weeks away from the start of the Premier League. The anticipation is killing us. And while the opening credits won’t roll for 18 days, the Guinness International Champions Cup, playing in a stadium near you, has been a trailer, giving us an advanced look at some of the characters and storylines of Europe’s biggest leagues. So far, we’ve seen a bit of everything. A Wayne Rooney thunderstrike that helped United sink Roma. City knocking in five against a woeful AC Milan defense. And Inter Milan edging Real Madrid in a penalty shoot-out.
While seeing Europe’s biggest stars on North American soil gives us The Thickening, we’ve also savored the way America’s World Cup passion has bubbled over into these pre-season fixtures. The amalgam of the world’s game and American tailgating traditions, like cornhole, is a beautiful sight to behold. We love seeing the images and tales you have sent us from each of the games and we’re thrilled to pod from Yankee Stadium Wednesday evening when Manchester City play Liverpool.
Tickets are still available and can be purchased by visiting the GICC website.
